Wheel of Fortune Tarot Card Meaning

Wheel of Fortune Tarot Card Meaning

The Wheel of Fortune is card number 10 in the Major Arcana and represents the eternal cycles of fate, the turning points of destiny, and the understanding that change is the only constant in life. In the traditional Rider-Waite imagery, a great wheel floats in the sky surrounded by clouds, inscribed with the letters TARO (or ROTA, meaning wheel) and alchemical symbols. Four figures sit at the corners representing the fixed signs of the zodiac: the angel (Aquarius), the eagle (Scorpio), the lion (Leo), and the bull (Taurus). On the wheel itself, a sphinx sits at the top holding a sword of discernment, while Anubis descends on one side and a serpent on the other, representing the eternal rise and fall of fortune.

This card carries the energy of Jupiter, the planet of expansion, luck, and higher purpose, connecting it to themes of growth, opportunity, and the benevolent hand of fate. When The Wheel of Fortune appears in a reading, it signals that significant change is coming, a turning point that shifts the trajectory of your life in ways both unexpected and ultimately meaningful. The wheel turns for everyone, and your position on it is about to change.

Upright Meaning

When The Wheel of Fortune appears upright in a tarot reading, it heralds a significant turning point in your life. Change is coming, and it carries the energy of expansion, opportunity, and positive momentum. The wheel is turning in your favor, bringing new circumstances that open doors previously closed and creating possibilities you may not have imagined. This is a time of good fortune, synchronicity, and the sense that the universe is conspiring on your behalf.

The Wheel of Fortune upright speaks to the cyclical nature of existence. If you have been experiencing difficulty, this card promises that the cycle is shifting and better times are approaching. Nothing in life remains static, and the very impermanence that once brought loss now brings renewal. Trust that the wheel’s turning serves a larger purpose, even when you cannot see the full picture from your current vantage point.

In a general reading, The Wheel of Fortune upright often indicates that karma is at work in your life. The seeds you have planted through past actions, intentions, and choices are now bearing fruit. If you have acted with integrity and generosity, expect positive returns. This card reminds you that you are both subject to fate and an active participant in creating it through your choices and attitudes.

The Wheel of Fortune also represents the importance of adaptability. Those who thrive are not those who resist change but those who learn to move with it, adjusting their sails to catch whatever wind the wheel brings. Flexibility, optimism, and trust in the larger pattern of your life will serve you well during this time of transition.

Reversed Meaning

When The Wheel of Fortune appears reversed, its energy of positive change becomes disrupted by resistance, setbacks, or the sense that luck has turned against you. The reversal suggests that you are experiencing the downward turn of the wheel, a period where circumstances feel challenging and progress seems blocked.

On one hand, The Wheel of Fortune reversed may indicate that you are resisting necessary change. You may be clinging to circumstances, relationships, or identities that have run their course, refusing to accept that the wheel must turn. This resistance creates suffering because it pits your will against the natural flow of life. The more you grip, the more painful the inevitable transition becomes.

On the other hand, The Wheel of Fortune reversed can indicate a period of genuinely bad luck or external setbacks that feel beyond your control. Plans may fall through, opportunities may evaporate, and circumstances may shift in unwelcome directions. While frustrating, this card reminds you that the wheel never stops turning. The current downturn is temporary, and your response to adversity shapes what the next upswing will bring.

The Wheel of Fortune reversed may also suggest that you are caught in repetitive cycles, making the same mistakes, attracting the same problematic situations, or failing to learn the lessons that life keeps presenting. Breaking these patterns requires conscious awareness and the willingness to make different choices even when old habits feel comfortable.
